Eye eye…

It’s been an eventful few weeks since I last wrote one of these things. Not only have we endured another heat wave here in the UK, but your “esteemed” correspondent’s left eye decided to fall apart again, resulting in another round of emergency retinal surgery.

Whatever criticisms people may have of the NHS, you won’t hear them from me. From the moment I rang the Eye Clinic to the moment I was lying on the operating table took a grand total of seven hours, and it didn’t cost me a penny beyond the National Insurance contributions already coming out of my wages.

The only real downside to this is that I’m functionally blind in my left eye thanks to a bubble of C3F8 that was injected into the space where my vitreous humour used to be. The bubble is shrinking as it dissolves into the new fluid my eye is producing, but as I write this, it’s currently taking up the bottom half of the field of vision of my left eye. When my brain is not tired, I can work around it pretty well, but the more tired I get, the harder that is, especially as my left seems to be my dominant eye.

Which, considering I’m left-handed, seems to be a fairly logical assumption.

Unfortunately, this temporary conscious repositioning my right eye as dominant is tiring, so my brain gets tired earlier than my body, so I just get grumpy.

There’s also work-based shite that I really don’t want to go into as that triggers all kind of panic attacks, depression and everything, so I’d rather not think about that unless I absolutely have to.

In more interesting and less stressful news, I seem to have rediscovered my love of Iron Maiden. So much so that I’ve joined the Iron Maiden Fan Club for this year and have ordered a couple of t-shirts. One is the Aces High design (favourite song) and the other one, which I’m currently sat here wearing, is the Book Of Souls album design.

Going to try giving Senjutsu another listen tonight. When I bought it back in 2021, I wasn’t really in a good frame of mind to give it a fair hearing and I’ve not really had much time since to give things another go. I did try to listen to it on my new DAP (digital audio player – basically an MP3 player) a few nights ago, but the track listing was all in the wrong order and I was tired… so… bleeeacch…

Talking of the DAP (I bought the HiBy R1, if anyone’s interested), it’s a neat little device. Not only is it ridiculously easy to use once it’s set up – literally plug it into your PC via a USB data cable and then drag and drop your files from your Music Drive onto the memory card you’ve got inside the device.

Simple as that.

So much easier than trying to load mp3 files onto my phone, which involves loading the files into OneDrive then downloading them into Downloads on the phone and moving them across to Music. Which is a real pain in the proverbial.

And the improvement in sound over playing things from your phone is noticable, even on Bluetooth headphones. Since I’m currently on an Iron Maiden kick at the moment (probably an ADHD hyperfocus, but there you go), I stuck on Powerslave and the sound is crisper than a bag of Seebrooks. You can literally hear every pluck of the bass strings Steve Harris makes, which is an integral part of the band’s sound which doesn’t come through when you try listening on your phone. Neither does the space in the sound.

Anyway… GP on Monday as a check-in on the Mirtazipine (probably going to need an increase in dose because I’m still not exactly stable – still struggling with “low mood”) and get a sicknote and to Calderdale Infirmary on Thursday to get the eye checked.

Hopefully, in early September, I may be finally reaching the top of the waiting list for ADHD medication titration. I spoke to someone at CareADHD last week and they’re suggesting I should hear something around the 5th.

So hopefully things might start to improve on that score.
