No interview in this edition of The Wyrd Ways Rock Show, so it’s a real “good news, bad news” situation.
The bad news is that you don’t get to hear from a band or a member of the worldwide Rock and Metal community who can give us a perspective that we might not normally have. That’s why I want to interview people on the show, to show that the stereotype of the knuckle-dragging moron is completely and utterly wrong. I especially want to uplift the voices of the people who society at large is ignoring, glossing over or even trying to erase. That’s happening a lot on social media at the moment. Strippers, pole dancers, sex educators, sex workers and even reproductive health accounts are being shadowbanned or outright banned by Meta. And we all know the poem, right? “First they came for the…”
Well, I’m not staying silent because I’ve read the poem, and as a neurodivergent Metalhead with nerdy and unusual hobbies who supports decriminalization of sex work, and is vocal about it, I know I’m on that list. Far lower down than LGBTQIA+, BIPOC and sex workers, but I’m there. So I’m using my cis hetero white male privilege while I can, before it gets taken off me.
Why am I making it “political”?
Because it needs to be said and far too many people aren’t willing to stick their heads above the parapet. They think this will all go away if we ignore it. It won’t. The Far Right and Fundamentalist Christo-Fascists in Europe and America, including The Reform Party here in the UK, are well-funded and are trying like hell to remake society in their own image. That even includes efforts to censor and ban our music. Look at the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2026. It’s all in there in black and white.
And this isn’t a “conspiracy theory”. I’m seeing this happen to people I know.
Ahem…
Anyway, the “good news” is more room for new music, some of which I can absolutely guarantee you’ll not have heard before. Unless you’re currently sat in my chair, in my living room. Which you’re not, because that’s me. And I wouldn’t wish being me on anyone.
